Kiddush Cup Size

How Big Does A Kiddush Cup Have To Be?

Boruch Rappaport here again, to answer a question that many ask — How big does a Kiddush Cup have to be? The answer is "a revi’is", a quarter of the Biblical quantity "Lug". How big is a quarter of a lug? Well, let’s make a long story short, since this is not really the forum to look for in-depth discussions in Jewish Law. There are a few opinions, the most famous two being 86 cc. and 150 cc.

In practice, the Kiddush on Sabbath Eve, Friday night, is Biblical in authority, therefore one should be strict to make sure that his Kiddush Cup contains 150 cc at least. For other Kiddushes, like Shabbos in the morning, or on the Jewish Holidays when they don’t fall on Shabbos, which are Rabbinic in authority, (very sacred but less so than Biblical), one who is lenient to take a smaller cup of at least 86 cc. is not incorrect.

Shavuos Kiddush Cup

Boruch Rappaport Presents Judaica Art — A Kiddush Cup for Shavuos

As I wrote in my post about the Shabbos Kiddush Cup, I have a personal friend that I know for many years, who is an artist who creates gorgeous Judaica art pieces from silver, gold, and precious stones. In this blog I will show you two of his pieces, Kiddush Cups, for Shavuos in this post, and for Shabbos in the link above. Take a look first, but click on the picture to open a new window with the full size view. Shoving the picture into a blog column doesn’t do proper justice. (Neither does the bigger picture lol, but it is the best that I have).

Judaica Art - Shavuos Kiddush Cup

On the side of the Kiddush Cup is engraved Mount Sinai at the time of the giving of the Torah. On the plate, viewable when you click the picture, are engraved four themes from the Megilla of Ruth.

I have seen this Kiddush Cup and plate with my own eyes, and it is truly a special work of art. These two Kiddush Cups are all that I will present in this blog, the rest, bigger pieces in general, you can find in my main Judaica blog. The Kiddush Cup for Shavuos is his smallest work, and has the lowest price. Before I quote you any price I must preface that I cannot be personally responsible for the price, the artist is the seller, not me, and this is something which I have no control over, it is not in my hands. There are factors that could change the price, for example the fluctuating value of silver and gold, and the volatile rate of the dollar.

That being said, the artist recently quoted me for this Kiddush Cup and plate a price of six thousand dollars.

If you are interested to consider this piece for your table, please give me a phone call, I can arrange a meeting between the two of you. We live in Israel (GMT + 3) (London + 2). Please call between 8 am and 11:59 pm my time, from Sunday through Thursday. (Kindly refrain from calling on Fridays and Saturdays). My number is 972-2-652-7420. We speak English, Hebrew, and Yiddish.

Judaica Shabbos Kiddush Cup

Judaica Art at its Best !!!

I have a personal friend that I have known for years who designs and creates exquisite Judaica Art items, from silver, gold, and precious stones. They are breathtaking, real collector’s items. In this post I will show you a Kiddush Cup for Shabbos. First take a look, then I will describe it:

judaica shabbos kiddish cup           judaica shabbos kiddush cup

For a larger, nicer picture, including the plate, click either of the pictures. It opens to a new window. (Do an "Expand to Regular Size" by putting your mouse over the new picture in the right bottom corner). There you will be able to take note of the detail. Kvetching it into the space of a blog doesn’t do it proper justice.

Everything that you see is personally hand made by the artist. This is a Judaica - Shabbos Kiddush Cup with its plate. On the plate is engraved the Lechem HaPanim (the "Showbread") as it stood in the Holy Temple. The side of the Kiddush Cup is engraved with a picture of the Shabbos table. Note that the entire Kiddush is engraved around and under the top edge of the Kiddush Cup, 400 letters.

This Judaica piece is just beautiful, makes your heart beat fast just to look at it. It might not be an exaggeration to say that if Betzalel were alive today, that this artist would be in the first row of his assistants.

If you would be interested in considering purchasing this item I can arrange a meeting between the two of you. I will tell you how much it costs in a minute, after I preface that I cannot be personally responsible for the quoted price, as this is something that is not in my hands, it is out of my control. And it could be affected, amongst other things, by the changing value of the dollar, silver, and gold. However, he gave me this quote recently.

This, and the Shavuos Kiddush cup also on this blog, are the smallest works of the artist, and he is asking for this one ten thousand dollars.

If you are interested to consider this piece for your table, please give me a phone call.
